Google Favors Mobile

In February 2015 Google posted an article on their Webmaster Central blog entitled "Finding more mobile-friendly search results". The article describes how Google will adapt its search algorithms to find more relevant information for mobile-friendly sites. In fact Google will be expanding its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal for mobile searches.

Essentially what Google is saying is that it will cater to mobile-friendly sites when searching from a mobile device! The bottom line: a mobile-friendly site will rank higher in the SERPS (search engine results pages) for mobile searches than a site that is not mobile-friendly. Part of Google's decision for this change is based on the fact that more people than ever before are using mobile devices to access the internet.

For some statistics regarding mobile device usage, see our blog article entitled "3 Reasons Your Business Website Should be Responsive".

Google also has suggestions on how to make your site mobile-friendly if it isn't already. Remember, if your site is responsive then it is also mobile friendly.

Google's efforts to include more mobile-friendly websites in mobile search results begins on April 21, 2015.

So what does this mean for you? If your competitor has a mobile-friendly site and you don't, you could be at a distinct disadvantage in the mobile search results beginning April 21. The good news is that, if your site is small and you start now, you may have enough time to make the switch to a responsive or mobile friendly theme especially if you are using a CMS like WordPress or Drupal.
